District History

The Fort Sam Houston Independent School District was created in 1951, and is located entirely on the Fort Sam Houston Army Post in northeast San Antonio.  Serving over 1546 school-age military dependents who reside on the Post and Camp Bullis, the district is committed to providing an outstanding educational opportunity for all students. Funds for the school district budget are derived from Public Law 103-382 (Impact Aid) and from the Texas Public School Foundation Program.  This represents the main source of revenue since the school district is not permitted by law to levy tax or sell bonds for revenue.

Fort Sam Houston ISD is a Texas public school district that operates one elementary school (grades PK - 5), and one middle/high school (grades 6 – 12).  Fort Sam Houston Elementary School serves approximately 819 elementary students while Robert G. Cole Middle/High School serves 727 students.

The Fort Sam Houston ISD has taken pride in being a leader in the area of student performance.  Fort Sam Houston students consistently score above the national average on nationally normed tests.   The district has been highly recognized on state and federal accountability ratings for their students’ academic performance.

One of the primary reasons for the district's long tradition of excellence is the quality of teachers it attracts and retains.  The student-teacher ratio is 13 to 1 and the average experience of district teachers is 14 years.  Each school provides opportunities and encouragement for student learning while inspiring both staff and students with a passion for education, skills in decision-making, and the knowledge to find information they need for a lifetime of learning.

Both schools are in the elite group of schools nationwide recognized as exemplary by the U.S. Department of Education.  School officials were honored by the Secretary of Education and the President of the United States in special ceremonies held in Washington D.C.

In 2007, Fort Sam Houston ISD earned the HEB Excellence in Education Award for Small School District, the first time winner of the prestigious award which includes a fifty thousand dollar award.  Additionally, the District and the Installation have twice been honored by the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) for its “Exemplary Partnerships.”
