Welcome to FSHISD! » Welcome!

Welcome to the Fort Sam Houston Independent School District! We are happy and proud you have chosen to visit our website. Here you will learn about our staff, our instructional programs, pertinent information for parents, students, and community, and much more.

FSHISD educates the children of active military personnel. The district is coterminous with the Fort Sam Houston Installation, meaning it has the same boundaries as the installation. We are diligent in our efforts to maintain a strong partnership with the Installation for the sake of our military-connected children.

Fort Sam Houston ISD is an independent school district, subject to the rules and regulations of the State of Texas and the federal government. It is one of three military school districts in Texas, all located in San Antonio, whose boundaries are coterminous with the military installation they serve: Fort Sam Houston, Lackland AFB, and Randolph AFB. As tenants on Joint Base San Antonio – Fort Sam Houston, FSHISD is committed to its ongoing partnership with JBSA-FSH.  The District relies on the installation to provide security services and complies with safety and security measures placed into effect by JBSA-FSH leadership.

Funding for the district, based upon student enrollment numbers, is received from two main sources: the Department of Education Impact Aid funds and the State of Texas Public School Foundation. The district is not allowed to levy taxes because it resides on federal property and there is no taxing or bonding authority.  Impact Aid funds are received in lieu of local property tax funds.

Children of military personnel residing on the military reservations of Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis are eligible to attend Fort Sam Houston schools. Active duty military parents assigned to the Fort Sam Houston Installation, but who are non-residents, can apply for their children to enroll in the district in grades Pre-Kindergarten through twelfth grade as transfer students through our Non-Resident Transfer Program. All non-resident transfer students must provide their own transportation to and from school. All current Non-Resident Transfer students must reapply. Parents or guardians may obtain a Non-Resident Transfer Application from the District Administration Office. Submit applications to the District Administration Office.

The District comprises two campuses – Fort Sam Houston Elementary, for grades PK-5, and Robert G. Cole Middle and High School, for grades 6-12. The district is also home to the Military School Districts’ Special Education Cooperative which provides specialized services to special needs students from all three San Antonio military-connected school districts.  The FSHISD district enrollment is approximately 1630.

FSHISD has a history and tradition of educational excellence. The District is proud of its achievements, having earned high ratings in the Texas Public School Accountability System and met all state compliance requirements.

FSHISD is committed to providing and cultivating a culture of continuous improvement. We set high expectations in order to prepare our students for success in their pursuit of higher education or in the workforce.
