Curriculum & Assessments

Welcome to the Fort Sam Houston ISD academic framework hub. We are dedicated to providing a challenging, comprehensive curriculum that prepares our students for success in college, careers, and life.

Empowering Students Through Rigorous Standards and Measurable Growth

By aligning our daily instruction with state standards and using targeted assessments, we can pinpoint exactly where students excel and where they may need extra support—a critical tool for ensuring a seamless transition for our military-connected learners. Fort Sam Houston ISD follows the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), which outline the state's expectations for what students should know and be able to do in every grade and subject. Our educators use these standards to build engaging, rigorous daily lessons. We use standardized state assessments to measure student mastery of the TEKS and ensure our schools are meeting high academic standards.

The TEKS comprises the state-mandated curriculum guidelines that establish what every student, from elementary school through high school, should know and be able to do.  They were developed to comply with §28.002(c) and (d) of the Texas Education Code. State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR)

The STAAR is currently administered in grades 3–8 and high school to measure subject mastery.

  • Grades 3–8 Assessments: Students are assessed in Reading and Mathematics (Grades 3–8), Science (Grades 5 and 8), and Social Studies (Grade 8).

  • End of Course (EOC) Assessments: High school students are administered assessments in English I, English II, Algebra I, Biology, and U.S. History.

TELPAS fulfills federal requirements for assessing the English language proficiency of Emergent Bilinguals in kindergarten through grade 12. TELPAS assesses second language development across four key domains: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

  • Grades 2–12: Multiple-choice assessments are used to evaluate reading.
  • Kindergarten & Grade 1: Holistically rated assessments based on ongoing classroom observations and written student work are used for all domains.

Supporting Emergent Bilingual Students in Texas

The PSAT is administered in FSHISD each year to provide practice for students in preparation for the SAT testing environment.

  • This assessment provides valuable skill information to assist students in learning their academic strengths and weaknesses.

  • It also provides the school with critical data used to recruit students for Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

SAT Suite Benefits: For Students & Parents

Aside from being a multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military, the ASVAB offers incredible career projection data for all participating students.

  • Results return in the form of a comprehensive career aptitude portfolio.

  • Students and counselors analyze this portfolio together to assist students in setting and achieving their unique post-secondary goals.
